What is imposter syndrome and how did I overcome it?
Moving to Singapore…
4 years ago I decided to pack my bags and moved to Singapore after getting a job offer from Visa when my daughter was just 5 months old. Growing up in the country side of Vietnam, I had never thought in my life that I could once visit another country not to mention getting a job. To my surprise, I had had chances to visit Thailand, for the ACM International Colleges Programming Contest, and then Indonesia, and the Philippines, to start building the training teams when I was working as the leader of the training department at Gameloft. But for me at that moment, Singapore was at another level.
I was a successful developer in Vietnam. I had had 5 years leading the training team for GameLoft and 2 years leading an outsourcing team at an outsourcing company. I did lots of knowledge sharing and coaching. And I did use English in my day to day job discussing with our customers in the US, they somehow got used to my accent and our communication was going really well. But all of that didn’t give me enough confidence about working in Singapore. It would be a life changing experience for me.
First day…
Visa had two offices in Singapore and it was really confusing because when you searched for Visa Singapore on Google Map, all you got were result of hundreds of visa offices for traveling. I should had chosen another company with a different name (lol).
